Tram Assisted Ride Sunday 22nd February

Tram Assisted Ride

This is just to remind you all to come along to the Cathedral tramstop  on Sunday 22nd February for the Cyclists’ Special Tram, which leaves at 10am for Waterthorpe.

There will be a choice of led rides, to suit all preferences of length and speed, from there through Rother Valley  Country Park (with cafe, toilets etc.) and out into the countryside - now adorned with catkins and snowdrops! Of course you can also set off on your own if you prefer.

One of the rides will be our first Women-only ride for 2009 at an easy pace with no stiff climbs. Our  return tram will leave Waterthrope at 3pm.

You don’t have to let me know whether or not you are joining us, although it’s always good to hear from you, but if you would like to be picked up at a tramstop along the blue route after the Cathedral then you MUST let me know beforehand so I can arrange it with the driver.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Take care,

Polly & Tony

Additional ride to Nottingham with Simon

I’m thinking about riding down to Nottingham on NCN route 6 , using the tram to get out of town, and getting the train back. If anyone would like to join me you’re welcome.  You’d need a bike that’s suitable for off-road tracks. £10.60 single fare nottingham  - sheffield - plenty of trains but 2 bikes per train so might have to split up for return journey if there are a lot of us. Weather looks dry.

Agustin - funeral and wake - Friday 13th February

augustin1We have received this from Barbara.

Thank you for your kind message. It seems particularly cruel that someone with such zest for life and with so many plans should die so soon. It will take a long time to come to terms with his death.

We have arranged his funeral for Friday 13th Feb at 13.30 hr at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium,to be followed by a celebration of his life at St Mary’s Community Centre, Bramall Lane.

We don’t want any flowers but would welcome any donation to either St Luke’s Hospice or Pancreatic Cancer UK, to be sent to the funeral directors.

Peace Funerals,Gleadless Mount, Sheffield S12 2LN. Tel 0800 0930505

Tony and Polly are arranging a  cycle ride to the crematorium and wonder if others would like to make a cycle cavalcade starting from the Uni concourse at 12.45?

Friday Night Ride - February - Steel and Mills

Friday February 27 2009 Steel and Mills

Meet 6-6.30 for a 6.45 start at Devonshire Green

Bring lights and locks!

A ride out through the west of town past steel magnate’s mansions to Forge Dam and then back down on roads and trails through the Porter Valley stopping at sites and remains from the 17th, 18th and 19th century steel industry into Sharrow going through the prettiest short cut in Sheffield to see the still working snuff mill and ride by Mark Firth’s grave, then to visit the last cementation furnace and some renovated little mesters workshops to finish at the Shakespeare pub at the end of Furnace Hill where crucible steel was started up in Sheffield city itself.

(Mick is cheesed off as he can’t make this ride but he really enjoyed the recce - highly recommended)

Heads up! This is all on roads, paths AND trails but no real off-road stuff; (bridleway and road from Forge Dam to Wiremill Dam then road and metalled paths through Bingham Woods and Endcliffe Park) some of the route has no street lighting so bring lights!  Probably not suitable for fixed wheels or delicate road bikes.  The final climb into Fulwood can be hard work but the downhill return journey is well worth it. Total distance approx. 10 miles.

Start Devonshire Green then up Broomspring Lane left into Gloucester St and cut through into Park Lane and along Clarkehouse Rd, Endcliffe Vale Rd, Fulwood Rd past Firth’s mansion at Oakbrook (now Notre Dame School) into Fulwood and turn down to Forge Dam.  Take the bridleway up to Whiteley Wood Rd and then left down to Wiremill Dam then Whiteley Wood Rd to pick up the trail through Bingham Park and on into Endcliffe Park to Hunters Bar.  Up Sharrow Vale Rd, cut through Frog Walk through the General Cemetery and then left through Broomhall and Netherthorpe down to Shalesmoor and finally down Furnace Hill to West Bar to finish at the Shakespeare.

See the map for route, landmarks and sites

Sheffield Friday Night Ride is not a club or society and there is no formal membership or sub; it is a mix of cycling, interest in one’s city and beer.  It is just something I, and others, organise; all are welcome to join in on the rides or organising rides as and when they want - email sheffieldfridaynightride@blueyonder.co.uk to get on the mailing list - standing ad in the Sheffield Telegraph.
