Tuesday Ride, January 27th, P*nistone Rd - myth and reality
Tonight, we feature P*nistone Rd - myth and reality.
An inspection of the new cycle route from Blonk St to Livesey St, part of NCN route 6 and eventually to link through to the TPT at Oughtibridge. We will have our Sustrans signage to hand, as well as a respected Council officer, so if we feel that any of the signage is inadequate we can make good.
Afterwards we will no doubt retire to a place of rest to discuss future route developments, including the possibility of signing Route 57 - Sheffield to Manchester via the Hope Valley.
All welcome - meet Barkers Pool at 6. Ian is meeting us at Neepsend Lane at 6:30 so that’s another possibility.
Come on the Supertram Special, 25th Jan
On Sunday the 25th, we have the first Sheffield Cyclists Special
Supertram of 2009. This leaves the Cathedral stop at 10am and
returning from Waterthorpe at 3pm with the cost of £5 per person with
bike return (£10 for 2 people with a tandem) - concessions apply. This
is supported by the CTC.
To come along on the 25th just turn up at Cathedral tramstop a little
before 10 a.m. The tram returns at 3 and you have a choice of a guided
ride, or make up your own itinerary. We will be using the National
Cycle Network as part of the ride. If anyone needs a bed for the night
beforehand we can oblige.
If you could sign up at
http://axelrod.plus.com/cyclistspecialsignup it would help us to know
how many are coming - there should be room for all though.
Future cyclists specials are on the following dates:
Sunday February 22nd - there will be an extra women-only ride as well
Sunday March 29th - don’t forget that British Summer Time will
re-start that day (Hooray!) so don’t miss the tram!
Sunday April 19th (avoiding the Sheffield half-marathon and the
following Bank Holiday)

Friday Night Ride - Sheffield tramways 1899-1960
Friday January 16 2009 Sheffield tramways 1899-1960
Meet 6-6.30 for a 6.45 start at the Showroom, Paternoster Row.
Bring lights and locks
Ride five of the old (1899-1960) tramways routes in Sheffield. Swoon at the site of the old tramsheds, be entranced by the last exposed tramtracks in the road, stare at the steel poles that held the power cables, marvel at the road excavated for the trams, finish with a pint in the shadow of the tramways power station. Its brilliant! Free tramways map to all who turn up. Social stops on the way.
Heads up! Suitable for all bikes, no off road bits although some of the roads are as rough as freshly ploughed fields! Except for about 50 yds we will not cycle along any of the Supertarm tracks. Total distance 16 miles.
Start Tramsheds facade Shoreham St/Leadmill Rd then following the Woodseats to Firth Park line through Pond St, Fitzalan Sq, Waingate, Wicker, Spital Hill, Burngreave, Pitsmoor, Fir Vale, Firth Park, Sheffield Lane Top then off the tramways routes through Shirecliffe, back of Wincobank and Meadowhall to Tinsley tramsheds on the Attercliffe line and then back into city centre along the Brightside line tramways to the site of the tramsheds in Tenter St, up onto Devonshire St and then up to West St across to Whitham Rd and follow the Crookes route right over to Walkley and follow the Walkley line back to Crookesmoor Rd and then down to the Fat Cat at Kelham Island to finish with a drink. Folding bikes are OK with First
First South Yorkshire have advised their staff that the carriage of folding bicycles on first bus services is permitted subject to the following conditions.
1. Such bicycles must be fully folded down.
2. There is sufficient space in the luggage or buggy areas for them to be carried.
3. In such circumstances they must be securely located to prevent any damage to vehicles, customers property or injury to customers.
Carriage of folding bicycles is ultimately a matter for the driver’s discretion subject to the above conditions.
This had come about as a result of representations from Simon Geller of cyclesheffield and the Passenger Transport Executive.
